#MythologyMonday: Nisaba

Nisaba

aka Nispa, Nin-se-ba-ak, Nanibgal, Nunbarshegunu, Ninimma

Nisaba, the lady of wisdom, is the ancient Sumerian goddess of writing and grain. She gave writing and numbers to her scribes that they might better tally and record the grain harvest. She may be the twin sister of Enlil, or his daughter. Her husband, of lower rank than her, is Haia, god of seals. Depicted rarely, she seems to take the form of a wise woman, whether young or old, matronly or virginal. She possesses a lapis lazuli tablet on which is recorded all the positions of the stars and their correspondence to the harvest, as well as all other heavenly records.
